Dr. Demento (born April 2, 1941 in Minneapolis ; actually Barret Eugene Hansen ) is an American radio presenter who specializes in parodies and novelty songs . He is considered the discoverer of the parodist Weird Al Yankovic . The fictional character Dr. He developed Demento as early as 1970 for a radio station in Los Angeles. His weekly broadcast was syndicated in the US from 1974 and was on radio until 2010, and has been broadcast online only since then. He also worked as an actor and screenwriter .

biography

According to his own account, he started his large record collection at the age of 12 when a second-hand shop was selling thousands of old records at low prices. He graduated from UCLA with a Masters degree in Folklore and Ethnic Music .

He then worked as a roadie for the bands Spirit and Canned Heat , later as A&R manager for Specialty Records and Warner Bros. Records , at the same time he hosted his weekly program. Another musician sponsored by Hansen alongside Weird Al Yankovic was Bobby Pickett . Hansen wrote and hosted two specials for MTV in the late 1980s , in which he presented the highlights of his radio programs. As an actor he was u. a. in UHF - channels with limited hope to be seen, his cameo appearances are far more common, e.g. B. on the Weird Al Show or the Simpsons .
