Barrett's Tunnels

The Barretts Tunnels are two consecutive disused historic railroad tunnels , in Kirkwood and in Des Peres , in St. Louis County in the US state of Missouri . Construction took two years, from 1851 to 1853, and the tunnels were in operation until 1944.

The former tunnels, which now house a museum, were designed by the engineer James Pugh Kirkwood (1807–1877). Originally the tunnel length was 137 meters, but it was shortened to 125 meters in 1929. The foundation is stone, the walls are partly made of brick and limestone or concrete . The time of significance is the NRHP defined 1850-1874.

The Barretts Tunnels were listed on December 8, 1978 by the National Register of Historic Places with the number 78003138 in the US list of monuments.
