In gynecology, Bartholinitis is the inflammation of the ducts of the Bartholin's gland , usually caused by Escherichia coli , Neisseria gonorrhoeae , Staphylococcus aureus or Chlamydia trachomatis . The gland itself is usually not affected.
The inflammation often leads to an empyema the size of a chicken egg , an accumulation of pus in the gland duct in the lower third of the large and small labia with adhesions of the ducts, known as Bartholin's abscess . Usually only one side is affected.
diagnosis
Pain, swelling and reddening are essential for the diagnosis . General symptoms such as fever are very rare. It typically affects women between the ages of 20 and 30. The picture of the disease is usually clear, occasionally a large boil (inflammation of the hair follicle, here the pubic hair ) can cause a similar clinical picture.
