Gospel of Bartholomew

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gospel of Bartholomew is a Gospel of the Passion, that is, a gospel that deals primarily with the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Therefore it is also good to compare it with the (apocryphal) Gospel of Peter . It originated around 250 AD.

The text of the Gospel has not been passed down beyond doubt, but its existence is proven by references in other scriptures. There are two texts, some of which are called the Gospel of Bartholomew, one of which may be part of the Gospel. These two texts, which refer to the Apostle Bartholomew, are the Quaestiones Bartholomaei and De resurrectione Christi . They have only survived in various incomplete copies in different languages, which is why a reconstruction has been difficult and so far has only succeeded in fragments.

Bartholomew speaks with the risen Christ and with Mary and asks them to reveal many secrets to him, e.g. B. how Mary was able to receive him, who is greater and more powerful than anything else and what Jesus did in hell. Bartholomew also asks him to show him the devil. He reveals to him his secrets, what his name is, how he was cast out of heaven, about the different kinds of angels.

Even Hades , the Greek god of death , occurs in Bartholomew gospel.
