Bartolomeo del Tintore

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bartolomeo del Tintore (* before 1461, probably in Ferrara , † 1495 in Bologna ) was an illuminator in Bologna in the late 15th century. He may also have been known as Bartolomeo di Giovanni Antonio . In his depiction of details and choice of motifs he shows a strong influence of the Italian Renaissance .

Bartolomeo del Tintore came from Ferrara , one of the centers of book illumination in early Renaissance Italy. After moving to Bologna, he probably first had a job to paint a book from the archives of his new hometown. He then worked on various illustrations of manuscripts for ecclesiastical and secular clients from the city. In 1494 he was last listed among the illuminators who were then active in the illustration of liturgical texts for the Church of San Petronio in Bologna, together with Bernardino da Siena (1380–1444), Taddeo Crivelli (1425–1479), Martino da Modena ( Martino di Giorgio da Modena) and Domenico Pagliarolo .

Bartolomeo del Tintore shows the influence of Cosimo Tura (1430–1495), one of the leading illuminators in Ferrara of his time.

It has recently been suggested that Bartolomeo del Tintore was also the painter of Pliny of Pico della Mirandola , an illuminator who painted a manuscript for the Italian scholar Giovanni Pico della Mirandola from the Ferrara area. However, this thesis is not undisputed.
