Baruto Kaito ( Japanese把 瑠 都 凱 斗), actually Kaido Höövelson (born November 5, 1984 in Rakvere , County Lääne-Viru ) is a former Estonian sumo wrestler .
Baruto, who began as a judoka in Estonia , rose rapidly through the lower leagues of Japanese sumo. With tournament victories and top places in the lower divisions since his debut in professional sport in May 2004, he reached the Jūryō division in September 2005 . However, an appendicitis prevented his tournament participation in November, which he was demoted for the time being and missed a possible record for the fastest promotion to the top division.
With a 15-0 victory in the March tournament ( Haru-Basho ) 2006, he made the jump into the Makuuchi Division, the highest league of Japanese sumo. Kitanofuji celebrated the last such tournament victory without defeat in the second division in 1963 .
In March 2007 he fell back due to an injury-related break in the juryo division, but was able to fight his way back to the makuuchi division by a 14-1 victory in the May tournament (Natsu-Basho) of the same year. In the July tournament he suffered another knee injury in his first fight, which forced him to give up and for Baruto again meant the demotion to the juryo division.
There he won his third win (13-2) in the September tournament (Aki-Basho), although his injured knee was still visibly troubling him.
After a 14-1 in the March tournament ( Haru-Basho ) 2010 he was promoted to Ōzeki. In January 2012 he won his first tournament in the makuuchi division. In September 2012 he had to give up the tournament on the fourth day due to an injury. He also had to give up the following tournament in November after the third day. With that he lost his Ōzeki rank and was downgraded to sekiwake. In September 2013 he announced his resignation.
The former bouncer Baruto, whose battle name simply means " Balte ", has an impressive stature even for a sumo wrestler. He began his career in the Mihogaseki-beya wrestling team, but from the 2006 Aki Basho he joined the newly founded Onoe-beya. The former Komusubi Hamanoshima (Onoe Oyakata) left the Mihogaseki-Beya and founded his own wrestling stable, taking a total of six rikishi (including Baruto) with him.
