Baryancistrus is a genus of fish from the armor catfish family(Loricariidae). Species of this genus have been found in Brazil ( Rio Xingu ) and Venezuela ( Rio Orinoco and Rio Ventuari )so far.
Generic characteristics
The generic features are a large head and body, odontodes on the intermaxillary bones, numerous teeth, large upper jaws and a completely armored abdomen. The most striking feature to differentiate Baryancistrus from other genera in the family of Loricariids is a small membrane that starts from the dorsal fin and may or may not extend to the attachment of the adipose fin. Other genera ( Oligancistrus , Parancistrus , and Spectracanthicus ) have a similar membrane, which is then completely connected to the adipose fin.
History of description
The genus was described in 1989 by Lucia Rapp Py-Daniel. Individual species were known zoologically much earlier. B. Baryancistrus niveatus (1855) and Baryancistrus longipinnis (1895).
