Barzmühle: Water wheel pulled up because of low water

The Barzmühle is an undershot water mill on the Upper Rhine near Bad Zurzach in Switzerland , opposite the German town of Kadelburg . It is considered to be the only intact flour mill on the free-flowing Rhine. The Zurzach – Kadelburg ferry can be used to cross the Rhine .

history

The Barzmühle was first mentioned in 1446 on the occasion of a court hearing. The ship mill at that time was about 400 meters above its current location. The owner was the Bishop of Constance , who lent the mill to Hans Rychner von Holderbank in 1462. This ship mill was about 400 meters above today's mill building. It was anchored on the bank and accessible via a footbridge. In the 17th century it was moved down the Rhine. It burned down in 1711. Although there were concerns about the heavy shipping traffic, the mill was rebuilt at the old location. The Rhine was used as a transport route with barges and willows , and accidents occurred. Three salt ships from Eglisau collided with the wagon ferry in Kadelburg. During the occupation by the French army in 1800 there was an attack by marauding robbers on the millers. The son survived and the father succumbed to his injuries after two days. In 1857 Jakob Dambach and his sons took over the ship mill. Over the course of four generations, they gradually converted the mill into a stationary system. In 1816 there were still around 20 mills in the Zurzach district, most of which had overshot mill wheels.

The Barzmühle was acquired in 1947 by NOK who wanted to renovate it, and in 1976 the construction project was discontinued. Then the community of Zurzach acquired the Barzmühle. The mill building, built in 1878, was gradually renovated by the Zurzach building authority.

On June 27, 1998, a group of interested parties formed the Barzmühle Foundation . From 2000 to 2004 the mill was expanded into a museum and event location. She is looked after by the Historical Association of the Bad Zurzach District, which also maintains the Museum Höfli .
