Hans Rudolf Sennhauser (born April 12, 1931 in Bad Zurzach ) is a Swiss medieval archaeologist and emeritus professor of art history . In Switzerland he is considered an expert in the field of church archeology.

From 1980 to 1985 Sennhauser was Associate Professor for Monument Preservation and Archeology at the ETH Zurich , from 1985 to 1996 Full Professor. Sennhauser taught medieval art history at both the ETH and the University of Zurich .

Sennhauser has carried out numerous church and monastery excavations. In 1966 and from 1973 to 1974 he was involved in excavations at Basel Minster . In the mid-1990s he was involved in archaeological research at the Benedictine monastery of St. Johann in Müstair, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . He also led excavations in the St. Gallen monastery church, in Disenstis and Mistail. In addition, he is the author of many books and writings on churches and buildings of significant art history in Switzerland.

Thousands of artefacts and documentation had not yet been evaluated in 2016, partly because half a century after the excavations they did not go to the commissioning cantons, but to a foundation founded by Sennhauser. After court decisions by two instances, the foundation set up and presided over by Sennhauser had to hand over the excavation documents for the Basel Minster to the canton of Basel-Stadt. St. Gallen received three tons of excavation material in 2014, but only incomplete documentation. There were a total of 57 disputes in 13 cantons.
