The Basilica of Our Lady on the Pillar ( Spanish Basílica Nuestra Señora del Pilar ) is a Roman Catholic church in Ciudad San Vicente , El Salvador . The Church of the Diocese of San Vicente is under the invocation of Our Lady on the pillar of St. Maria consecrated and carries the title of minor basilica . It is listed as a historical monument.

history

According to tradition, a chapel was started by José Merino for a small picture of the Virgen del Pilar. Construction of the church began in 1762 by the Quintanilla family and was completed in 1769. Its forms were designed based on the baroque. The facade, which is structured with half columns, is divided into three floors. The three-aisled church was built from masonry and bricks and provided with a wooden beam ceiling. The main altar has a carved altarpiece.

The remains of the descendants of the Quintanilla family were buried in the crypt . José Simeón Cañas y Villacorta , known as the liberator of slaves in Central America, was also buried here on March 4, 1838. In San Vicente in 1833 he witnessed the protests of the Nonualco under their leader Anastasio Martir Aquino San Carlos .

The 1936 earthquake caused considerable damage to the church that was not repaired until 1959. On February 19, 1953, the church was declared a national monument because it is one of the oldest churches in El Salvador. In 1962, on the occasion of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary by Pope John XXIII. the rank of minor basilica . The earthquake in 2001 caused further damage. After extensive restoration work, the church was reopened on October 1st, 2008.
