Basalt column from Tieschen
The basalt column of Tieschen is the chimney of an extinct volcano in Tieschen in Styria .
Slowly emerging lava flows ejected by eruptions formed several volcanoes in south-eastern Styria around 16 million years ago. Thin-flowing lava, which cooled rapidly after its ascent to the surface of the earth, solidified into basalt , with many layers of huge basalt blocks being formed over time. The basalt column of Tieschen is such a basalt block that was excavated by quarry workers in the 19th century. It is located on the Königsberg to the west of Tieschen .
