Basarab I.

Basarab I. Întemeietorul ( German  Basarab the founder ; * unknown; † 1352 ) was a Wallachian voivode and is considered the founder of the Principality of Wallachia and the first Romanian ruling dynasty. He is also the namesake of the historical landscape of Bessarabia .

Life

The political crisis that set in in the Kingdom of Hungary after the Árpáden dynasty died out (1301), Basarab I used to unite the various political units that had previously existed in the country south of the Carpathian Mountains under his rule. The principality of Wallachia that arose in this way soon extended to the Danube and the Black Sea. The endeavor of Basarab I to free his sphere of influence from Hungarian suzerainty finally led to a Hungarian campaign in 1330 with the aim of restoring Hungarian suzerainty over Wallachia. In the battle of Posada in November of the same year, however, the Wallachians succeeded in defeating the Hungarians led by their King Charles I Robert . Despite the victory, Basarab I had to nominally continue to recognize Hungarian sovereignty. Basarab I was succeeded by his son Nicolae Alexandru.
