Basch (Low German)

Basch is the Low German term for coarse , rugged or brisk . It is mostly used in describing rowdy behavior. In relation to clothing, it means as much as daring or challenging . When a dish is called basch, it is something spicy. The term gets a completely different meaning when it is related to young women, a Basche Deern is a pretty girl.

In Hamburg , the term is most frequently used in connection with the expression Barmbek basch , which stands for the rowdiness attributed to the Barmbek people. Based on this historical term, a community center opened in Barmbek-Süd in January 2010 has been called Barmbek ° Basch .
