List of domestic dogs

The Basenji (also Congo Terrier ) is a breed of dogs recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 5, Section 6, Standard No. 43 ).

Origin and history

The Basenji is one of the primitive dogs, the pariah dogs or Schensi dogs . Basenjis can bark . However, their barking is monosyllabic, not very melodic and is rarely used, in which they resemble wolves .

It is believed that the breed either descended from the Egyptian Tesem or from his ancestors. In its appearance it is very similar to the Tesem. The name Basenji means something like "little wild thing out of the bush", which sounds like "Basenschi" in the language of the pygmies .

The Basenji comes from central Africa and was discovered there by the British in 1870. It has been systematically bred as a breed of dog since the 1930s. The Basenjis still live with the pygmies in the rainforest and drive the game into nets that have been set up for this purpose.

In 1868/71 Georg Schweinfurth discovered dogs he noticed in the Bahr-el-Ghasal area ( South Sudan ) as hunting helpers with the Niam-Niam Azande and Mangbetu .

description

The Basenji is similar in type to the Spitz . Its height at the withers is 40–43 cm. It weighs about eleven kilograms. The hair is short, shiny, dense and very fine. In the colors the fur is pure black and white; red brown and white; black, tan, and white with tan little markings over the eyes; black; tan and white. The brindle coat is characterized by black stripes on a red-brown background. From the neck to the chest, the fur is characterized by a white surface. The tail should always be turned up and have a white tip at the end.

attitude

These animals are extremely clean, do not smell, hardly lose hair and require very little care. Since Basenjis are relatively sensitive to cold, they should be kept indoors or in the apartment. The bitches of the breed only come into heat once a year.

Basenjis need a lot of exercise and activity, especially if you keep the Basenji in town. This breed requires the owner to have a certain amount of knowledge about dogs, so a Basenji is not suitable for beginners.

In their familiar surroundings (e.g. in the apartment) Basenjis are generally of a calm nature, but always follow what is happening around them attentively in order to be immediately on the go if something interesting happens. They develop their full temperament outdoors. There they love to run and hardly let anything else stop them from their current interest.

Basenjis are quite stubborn and usually try to put their own needs first. In any case, the upbringing is only successful on the basis of an extremely strong relationship of trust with the respective caregiver and within the framework of a clear and stable hierarchy. For the upbringing, especially in the first few years, a lot of time and a lot of patience must be planned.
