Basil (Jerusalem)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basil was the Patriarch of Jerusalem (around 821 to around 839).

Basil advocated the worship of icons in the church. In 836, under his chairmanship, a synod was held in Jerusalem declaring this position, with the participation of representatives from the Patriarchates of Alexandria and Antioch . It differed from the position of the Byzantine emperor Theophilos , who opposed the worship of images.
