The Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary ( Maltese Bażilika u Kolleġġjata tal-Viżitazzjoni ) is a Roman Catholic parish and collegiate church in Għarb on the island of Gozo in Malta . The church in the Diocese of Gozo with the patronage of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is consecrated to the Mother of God and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

Għarb became an independent parish on August 29, 1679 by Bishop Michele Giovanni Molina . It was founded as the second parish outside of Victoria . Its first seat was the Visitation Chapel , which still exists next to the village cemetery, also known as taż-Żejt .

Because of the growing population, it was decided to build a larger church in the middle of the village. This current church, built between 1699 and 1729 and consecrated on September 28, 1755, became the second collegiate church of Gozo on May 19, 1774.

Its elegant facade is compared to the larger church of Sant'Agnese in Agone by Francesco Borromini in Rome. There are beautiful sculptures on the outside and inside. On November 28, 1967, the church was opened by Pope Paul VI. raised to the rank of a minor basilica . The church building has been listed in the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands since 2012 .
