history

A previous building was built between 1805 and 1807. This was partially destroyed in 1833 and then rebuilt from 1836 to 1842. But even this building was not of the existing status and was almost completely replaced by today's church in 1886. The portico was completed in 1905. In 1998 the parish church was raised to the status of co-cathedral of the newly created diocese of Guantánamo-Baracoa. At the beginning of the 21st century, the condition of the church deteriorated considerably. An extensive restoration took place from 2008 to 2011. Pope Benedict XVI. elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica in 2013 .

In the church, the Cruz de la Parra , traced back to Christopher Columbus , is the oldest Christian symbol in the New World . Here, Bartolomé de las Casas read the first mass on the island.
