It is known for the Attur Jatre festival .

History of the sanctuary

The sanctuary was first mentioned in 1759 and was located about seven kilometers from the present church. The members of the community fell into captivity between 1784 and 1799 by the Tippoo Sultan , who took them to Shrirangapattana and destroyed the church. The Christians returning from captivity built a new church with a thatched roof on the way to Toakre in 1801, the priest came from Goa . In 1839 a new building was built a few kilometers away on the site of today's basilica. A pilgrimage developed for which the pastor Frank Pereira organized novenas and prayer services from 1895.

basilica

The older part of today's church was built in 1900 in neo-Gothic style and consecrated on January 22, 1901. The place of the previous church is indicated by a flower garden. In 1975, a chapel of St. Laurentius, whose statue is said to have played a role in the construction of the previous church. In 1998 the Pushkarini miracle basin was renovated in a modern Indian style, to which pilgrims can descend. Twin gates were built in front of the church in 1999.

For the 2001 anniversary, a larger, separate new building was completed in front of the church as a direct extension in order to be able to accommodate the pilgrims during the festival. Pope Francis elevated this new church to a minor basilica in 2016. The old church is still used as a prayer room.
