description
The monastery was the first of the Benedictine Congregation of Brazil and dates back to the 16th century. It is the responsibility of the parish of São Pedro. The original building from the 16th century was replaced at the end of the 17th century by a single-nave church designed by the architect Macário de São João, inspired by the Church of Il Gesu in Rome. The construction work started in 1582 and lasted until the beginning of the 20th century when the vaults and the crossing dome were completed according to the original plans. The demolition planned by the governor José Joaquim Seabra in 1912 for its urban modernization could be averted, one wing of the monastery was lost for road construction. The church was listed as a Historic Monument by the National Institute for Historical and Artistic Heritage in 1938 . Pope John Paul II made it a minor basilica in 1982. It is part of the historic center of the city of Salvador, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. In 2006 it was closed for almost a year during a renovation.
