The Basilica of the Immaculate Heart of Mary ( Spanish Basílica del Corazón de María ) is a Roman Catholic church in the Chilean capital, Santiago . The church belonging to the Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile is consecrated to the Blessed Mother Mary under the patronage of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

In 1870, after the revolution of 1868 in Spain, seven members of the Order of the Missionaries of the Heart of Mary came to Chile and two years later they built a chapel in Santiago.

On March 5, 1876, the construction of today's church began according to the plans of the architect and Claretian priest José Viladrich and under the direction of the priest Pedro Más. The church was consecrated to the Heart of Mary on December 7, 1879 by Bishop Joaquín Larraín Gandarillas.

Around 1910 a picture of Saint Jude Thaddäus was acquired in Spain. The picture was placed on an altar that came from the chapel of the Oratorians in Santiago who had to leave the city. In 1922 the first novena was prayed at the sanctuary of Jude Thaddeus.

In 1928 the church became the seat of the parish Heart of Mary. A year later, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the church was opened by Pope Pius XI. was the first to be raised to the rank of minor basilica with this patronage.

The basilica was declared a National Monument of Chile in the Historic Monument category in 1987. After the earthquake in 2010, the basilica showed severe structural damage, so that it had to be restored in about two years of work. It was finally reopened on March 18, 2012 by Archbishop Ricardo Ezzati Andrello .

The three-aisled basilica was built on a cruciform floor plan from bricks in the style of neo-renaissance and classicism. With a length of 55 meters, it measures 27 meters wide and 17 meters high. The central nave has a barrel vault with stitch caps , the low side aisles are separated by rows of columns and have flat ceilings. The towers sit on the side of the facade, they each have an octagonal base with a bell tower on top.

On the main altar is the 3.70 meter high altarpiece of the Heart of Mary, which was carved in wood in Spain and installed in 1898. It was crowned on September 3, 1950 by Cardinal José María Caro . The basilica also has eight side altars. Under the stained glass windows, the rose window in the choir with its representation of the Heart of Mary is significant.
