The Basilica of Our Lady of the Queen of Poland ( Polish Bazylika Matki Bożej Królowej Polski w Stalowej Woli ) is a Roman Catholic church in Stalowa Wola in the Polish Subcarpathian Voivodeship . The co- cathedral of the Diocese of Sandomierz is a St. Mary's Church with the patronage of Mary Queen and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The church was built between 1956 and 1973 according to the design of the architect Jan Bogusławski and the civil engineer Konstanty Jankowski. Construction was interrupted by the state for ten years from 1961. The completion was completed on December 2, 1973 with the consecration of the church by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła . The parish was founded in 1977. In 1992 the church became the co-cathedral of the diocese, in August 1998 Pope John Paul II granted it the rank of minor basilica, the solemn proclamation took place on September 20, 1998 by the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Józef Glemp .

architecture

The originality of the architectural idea of ​​the church is expressed in the combination of Gothic shape with modern technology of project implementation, in which prefabricated prestressed concrete elements were used. The interior is simple and modern, marble flooring, stained glass, electric organs. Next to it a free-standing bell tower. At the end of the design of the church environment in 1998–2002, a monument to Pope John Paul II was erected in front of the church, and in 2010 the John Paul II Museum was established.
