The Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows ( English Our Lady of Dolours Basilica ) or Puthanpally ( Malayalam പുത്തൻപള്ളി , German  New Church ) is a Syro-Malabar church in Thrissur in the Indian state of Kerala . The third tallest church in Asia is famous for its Indian neo-Gothic architecture.

history

The ruler of Cochin, Sakthan Thampuran, settled 52 Syrian-Christian families in Thrissur in 1794. In 1814 a church was completed and consecrated to Maria as Mater Dolorosakirche . For decades it was a center for the Thomas Christians in the region, today's Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. In 1874 the Chaldean Catholic Bishop Elias Mellus came to India at the request of the Syro-Malabar Christians and convinced a large part of the Christian community to accept him as their bishop. The group that followed Mellus was in this church and eventually separated from the Catholic hierarchy in the Rocos and Melus schism . The church building was renamed Mart Mariam Big Church and is now the cathedral of the Chaldean Church. As a replacement, the Syro-Malabar Catholics began building a new church in 1929, which was completed in 1940 and is known to this day as the Puthanpally (New Church). Pope John Paul II made the church a minor basilica in 1992 .

architecture

Based on the European church architecture, a neo-Gothic church with Indian influences was built. With an area of 2300 square meters and the 79 meter high Bible tower at the choir, it is one of the largest churches in Asia. Two 45-meter-high bell towers rise above the entrance, double-storey corridors run around the entire 110-meter-long nave and the 55-meter-wide transepts, which are also illuminated via a crossing dome . The church has a total of eleven altars, five on either side of the main altar. It is also decorated with murals of saints and scenes from the scriptures.
