Depending on the country of origin and harvest time of the plant, basil oil can contain various substances in different amounts, which can vary greatly: Oil made from the European spice basil ( Ocimum basilicum ) is characterized by high concentrations of linalool (30–90%) and estragole (50–90%) ). Other ingredients are 1,8-cineole and eugenol . African basil oil from Réunion or the Comoros, on the other hand, is rich in estragole and camphor , but contains only a small amount of linalool, cineole or eugenol.
Effect / application
The essential basil oil has a very strong anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory effect, it is relaxing and pain-relieving for stomach and menstrual cramps and cleanses the intestine for intestinal infections and digestive problems. Essential basil oil is used for restlessness, anxiety, stress-related complaints, nervousness and sleep disorders.
Contraindications
Basil oil should not be used during pregnancy. In general, permanent use should be avoided due to the harmfulness of estragole.
