The Basler AG , headquartered in Ahrensburg (Schleswig-Holstein) is a company in Vision Technology , the technology of artificial vision . Basler initially established itself on the market as a supplier of turnkey inspection systems for quality control and then began developing and manufacturing its own industrial cameras. Since 2010 the company has mainly focused on its camera business and is a developer and manufacturer of image processing components for use in industrial mass production, medicine & life sciences, as well as traffic control and logistics.

The company, founded in 1988 by Norbert Basler, employs around 850 people at its locations in Ahrensburg, USA, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, China and Japan.

In total, Basler AG manufactured more than 500 products in 2013 and is listed on the stock exchange.

history

The company was founded by Norbert Basler (* 1963) and Stephan Berendsen in Lübeck in 1988 . In the following years, various offshoots were established abroad: Basler Inc. in Exton, PA, USA in 1994 ; 1995 Basler Asia Pte. Ltd. in Singapore; the Basler Representative Office in Taiwan, the Optical Media Inspection and Sealing Inspection business units , the Machine Vision Components business unit and the Display Inspection business unit . The digital camera division has existed since 1997. The company went public with the introduction of the share on the Neuer Markt in Frankfurt on March 23, 1999. In the same year, the Web Inspection division was added, and in 1999 the company moved to Ahrensburg. One year after the IPO, CEO Norbert Basler resigned for health reasons and switched to the Supervisory Board, which he has chaired since 2003. Dietmar Ley succeeded him on the board.

The company continued to grow, including the establishment of Basler Vision Technologies Taiwan Inc. as an independent subsidiary in 2001 and the establishment of a new representative office in Shanghai in 2002. In the following years service and sales offices were added in Korea and Japan. In 2004 Basler AG received the innovation award of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry for an inspection system for testing starting products for the manufacture of flat screens. In 2006 this was followed by an award as “ Landmark in the Land of Ideas 2006 ”. With the company's 20th anniversary in 2008, Basler AG was also able to celebrate the business year with the highest turnover up to that point. Since 2008, there has been increasing investment in surveillance cameras (IP cameras). For Basler AG, 2009 was marked by the negative effects of the global economic and financial crisis. At the end of 2009, Basler AG sold the formerly declining core business of Optical Media Inspection (with a turnover of less than EUR 2 million most recently) to the Canadian company Xiris.

While the business segment of turnkey inspection systems ("Solutions") was massively affected by the effects of the financial crisis, the business segment of industrial cameras ("Components") was able to cope with the crisis comparatively well. In 2010, the concentration on the camera business and the sale or abandonment of some product lines within the solutions business led to an increase in earnings potential. Basler AG sold Sealing Inspection to Asentics GmbH & Co. KG and the solar wafer inspection product line to Semilab. In August 2014, the company opened a camera assembly factory in Singapore. Industrial cameras of the ace model family for the Asian market are assembled and sold there. In 2013, Basler AG took a leading position in the field of GigE Vision cameras. In February 2015, series production of Basler Lenses, a series of lenses manufactured by Fujinon on behalf of Basler, began.
