Basmath is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra .

The city is part of the Hingoli District . Basmath has municipal council status . The city is divided into 26 wards . It had a total of 68,846 inhabitants on the cut-off date of the 2011 census, of which 35,556 were men and 33,290 women. Hindus make up the plurality of the city's population with a share of over 49%. Muslims make up 38% and Buddhists make up 11%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 83.44%, well above the national average.
