Bastion XV

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The former bastion XV (Czech bastion XV or bašta XV , also bastion XV Všech svatých ), also bastion XV - All Saints' Day , was part of the earlier and only partially preserved fortifications of Prague , specifically the Marienwehr wall on the left bank of the Vltava . It was located in today's cadastral municipality Hradčany (German Hradschin) in the Czech capital Prague , which belongs to the administrative districts of Prague 1 and Prague 6 .

The older Gothic fortifications of Prague were rebuilt and redesigned in the 17th and 18th centuries and equipped with bastions and gates; the Marienwehr wall on the left bank of the Vltava had a total of 20 bastions, numbered from I to XV. Like all bastions of the Prague fortifications, which were named after a nearby sacred building, Bastion XV was called "All Saints" after a nearby church. The wall and curtains were solidly reinforced with stone or bricks and were up to three meters thick. This fortification system was gradually dissolved after 1866. Today only the remaining objects are preserved.

Bastion XV had the following dimensions:

Left flank: 36 m
Face left: 98 m
Face right: 95 m
Right flank: 35 m
Throat: 166 m
Depth: 83 m

The bastion had a double wall with a shooting line ( Fausse-Braie ).

This fortification system was gradually dissolved after 1866. Today only the remaining objects are preserved. Around 1899/1900 some buildings in the neo-renaissance style were built here, into which a cadet school moved in 1900. Later, the Vysoká škola válečná was settled here, and over time other government agencies also changed their premises. Today it is the building of the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic .
