The Bat Cave (Nepali: Oderibuwan Gupha or Chameri Gufa ) is part of an extensive cave system that is located north of Pokhara in Nepal .

Position and geometry

The karst cave is located in the limestone massif of the northern valley of the Seti Gandaki , in the descent of its left tributary, the Kali River, at an altitude of about 990  m in a forest area. The cave is about 150 m long and 15 m high. In the immediate vicinity there are other caves, the Kumari Cave and the Mahendra Cave .

history

The cave was discovered by the local landowner (according to Indian chronicles in 2040) and has been used for tourism ever since. On the cave walls there are incised drawings of elephants and local deities. The show cave takes its name from the thousands of bats that nest and hibernate there.

today

Entry costs a few Nepalese rupees , but it is difficult to get around even with a local guide who knows the area. After a few flights of stairs you have to squeeze your way through a very narrow hole and the cave is not lit. There are no handrails and no luggage is allowed. Up to 18 species of bat appear in the cave during the winter months.
