Baten Kaitos Origins ( Japanese バ テ ン ・ カ イ ト ス II 始 ま り の 翼 と 神 々 の 嗣子 Baten Kaitos II: Hajimari no Tsubasa to Kamigami no Shishi ) is a Japanese computer role-playing game . It is the sequel to the 2003 first published game Baten Kaitos: The Wings of Eternity and the Lost Ocean . Like its predecessor, Origins was developed jointly by the two Japanese studios Monolith Soft and tri-Crescendo . Nintendo released it in Japan and North America in 2006 for the Nintendo GameCube ; in Europe, on the other hand, the game never came out.

    Action and gameplay

Although Baten Kaitos Origins is a sequel, it is a prequel in terms of plot , as they play Kaitos 20 years before the events of the first Baten . Sagi from the Alfard Empire acts as the protagonist of the plot. Some characters known from the predecessor appear again, but are younger. The game principle of the predecessor has been largely adopted, including the card and turn-based combat system, which has been revised and simplified in some places.

    development

Due to the great popularity of Baten Kaitos with the fans, the developers decided to develop a successor. Work on this lasted for 18 months. About 50 developers were involved, with Monolith Soft mainly responsible for design and tri-crescendo for programming and sound. Yasuyuki Honne held the role of director along with Hiroya Hatsushiba . Honne was also the game's graphic director and designed the cards while Hatsushiba programmed the sound. The plot of the game comes from the pen of Koh Kojima and Motoi Sakuraba composed the soundtrack. The game's producers were Shinji Noguchi from Namco Bandai , Katsumi Miyazaki from Monolith Soft, studio president Hirohide Sugiura and Nintendo president Satoru Iwata ( executive producer ).

Baten Kaitos Origins was unveiled by the Japanese Famitsu in September 2005. The title was originally due to appear in Japan in December, but was then postponed to 2006. At that time, the GameCube successor Wii was already being launched. Since the development of Origins was already very advanced, it was decided against a Wii port and left the project on the GameCube. In addition, Monolith Soft considers the console to be a special piece of hardware for which new and thoroughly thought-out ideas are required.

    Sales figures

Since the GameCube was at the end of its life for the release of Baten Kaitos Origins in 2006, the Japanese market launch for the game was bad. It is estimated that the game sold a total of 100,000 times worldwide; 60,000 of these games are said to have been sold in America. According to Media Create, Baten Kaitos Origins was bought almost 27,000 times in Japan in 2006.

    reception

From 21 ratings, the website Metacritic has determined an average rating for Baten Kaitos Origins of 75/100 points. Mark Bozon from IGN gave the game a score of 8.3 / 10. He judged the game to be graphically varied and true to the original game. However, the unusual fighting principle makes the game not suitable for everyone. Therefore, he could not give a generally valid purchase recommendation for the game. Fans of the first Baten Kaitos should look forward to the sequel, because Origins keep the level of difficulty, offer a better plot and a longer playing time. GameSpot rated Baten Kaitos Origins 7.5 out of 10. Bethany Massimilla praised the plot, which narrated the origins of the Baten Kaitos game world well, as well as the scope and card combat system. Massimilla's main points of criticism were the sometimes very high degree of difficulty of some boss fights, the level design, which was confusing in some places, and the need to constantly manage his deck of cards.
