Bates Gill

Bates Gill (born May 2, 1959 ) is an American political scientist and has been CEO of the United States Studies Center at the University of Sydney since October 2012 .

Previously, from October 1, 2007 to December 31, 2012, he was the sixth director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) . He was the first American to hold this post.

Bates Gill is married to the virologist Sarah Palmer.

Life

Previous positions include the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC , and the post of Director at the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution , also in Washington, DC in 1993 Until 1997, Bates Gill founded and led the East Asia Arms Control and Security Project at SIPRI.

Bates Gill received his PhD in foreign policy from the Woodrow Wilson Department of Government and Foreign Affairs at Virginia University .
