The Bathurst Lighthouse is one of two lighthouses on Rottnest Island , the other is the Wadjemup Lighthouse . Rottnest Island is located in Western Australia near Perth . Bathurst Lighthouse is located at Bathurst Point in the northeast of the island and began operating in 1900 as a result of a number of shipping accidents in the area, including the loss of the City of York ship in 1899.

The lamp and the lantern house were originally intended for the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse , but were never used there. In 1920, the originally uninterrupted acetylene flame was replaced by an acetylene flash. At the same time the lighthouse keepers were withdrawn. Electric light was installed in 1986.

The Bathurst Lighthouse complements the Wadjemup Lighthouse. They are supposed to guide the ships to and from Fremantle safely through the Kingston Reef . The timing of the light is four flashes every 16 seconds.
