A battery grip is an accessory for system cameras , especially single lens reflex cameras , to simplify operation for portrait shots and to extend the duration of the power supply.

A battery grip is usually attached to the underside of the camera, often with a screw in the tripod screw thread ; the battery grip itself has a tripod thread on the underside. Depending on the model, it includes the option of holding a certain number of rechargeable batteries (usually one or two) or batteries (often 2 to 6). This means that the camera can be supplied with the power required for operation independently for longer. The battery grip increases the overall weight of the camera, which is disadvantageous when on the move, but has a positive effect on handling due to the increased inertia.

A battery grip is a battery housing in which accumulators and / or batteries can be inserted. Depending on the model, this is done either directly or via a rail / magazine. Some models allow operation with AA batteries in this way. The equipment of a battery grip may also include a wireless remote release or an interval timer for automatic, preset release. The electrical contact can be made in two ways, depending on the model. One possibility is for the battery grip to have a protruding part that slides into the camera's battery compartment. In this case, the existing battery is replaced by the two in the battery handle. Alternatively, there is the design that connects to the camera via a contact strip. The first battery remains in the camera's battery compartment, the second is in the battery grip. The battery grip supplies the camera with electricity via the connection, and electrical signals can also be transmitted.

Depending on the type, the battery grip has its own trigger and other buttons with which the camera can be operated. The operating elements repeat existing elements of the camera at the identical housing position after a 90 ° rotation (portrait photography).

Cameras differ in their size and in the electrical connections. Therefore, you can usually only attach a battery grip that has been specially manufactured for the respective model (or a model series). Rubber covers that protect the camera body usually cannot be used with a battery grip.
