Battle Bugs is a strategy game that was developed by Epyx and released in 1994 by Sierra-Online for DOS . It can be played alone against the computer or in pairs against each other using a keyboard.

background

Two insect kingdoms compete for food supplies. The game has around 50 levels that consist of a battlefield made up of leftover food, spilled beverages and sometimes insecticide . At each level you are assigned a fixed group of different insects.

After passing some levels, you will be awarded special medals by the queen ant.

control

For each level you are allocated a fixed quota of time in which you can solve the task (for example conquering a given number of food items by setting a flag). There are two modes: when the clock is stopped, you can give the insects instructions on where to move and, for specific insects, what to do there. In the mode in which the time is running, you can only watch the battle and intervene again by stopping the time.

The insects

Every insect has its strengths and weaknesses. So the cockroach is a good defender and immune to poison, woodlice and ants can throw bombs, the moth can carry most other insects through the air, the stink beetle can fart , the rhinoceros beetle is the best fighter, and so on.

weapons

Aside from the insect against insect fight, weapons are available to a limited extent. Stones can be used by throwing them against a single opponent. Firecrackers help against two or more weaker opponents. Bombs are the most powerful weapon (with the exception of woodlice). The smell of Limburg cheese confuses the insects that are in a certain radius around the cheese so that they are slowed down. Missiles help against flying insects.

Others

The game has lots of fun details. Part of the control window is based on the Game Boy and is called Lame Toy. Likewise, the ant generals, for example, have names that are based on well-known historical generals.
