Battoulah ( Arabic البطولة) is a mask traditionally worn by Muslim, Arab women in Arab states of the Persian Gulf , including Bahrain , Kuwait , Saudi Arabia , United Arab Emirates , Oman and Qatar , as well as in southern Iran . The origin of the battoulah is unknown, but it is believed that it reached the eastern Arabian Peninsula from Gujarat in the late 18th century.

The tradition is less widespread among the younger generations, but is maintained by women aged 50 and over and those who live in rural areas.
