The building standard is a grid size in construction that is used, for example, for masonry . The base unit (a head) corresponds to the eighth part of a meter , i.e. 12.5 cm; hence the abbreviation am and the adjective octametric . It is regulated in DIN 4172 (scale in building construction). Standard dimensions are used for heights, widths and thicknesses.

Nominal dimensions of individual components :

  • The nominal building size is obtained by subtracting the width of a joint . Bricks or sand-lime bricks are often made in these brick formats . Built-in components (e.g. windows and doors) are also often manufactured to the overall dimensions. If you add a mortar joint of 1 cm to the component, for example a brick with a width of 24 cm, the sum of the stone and joint is again the standard construction dimension (25 cm).

The nominal wall dimensions are obtained depending on the type of construction:

  • The pillar dimension (also the outer dimension ) is 1 cm shorter, as the mortar joint is missing on the last stone (stone + joint = standard structural dimension).
  • The projection dimension (also the attachment dimension ) corresponds to the 12.5 cm grid, as it has a joint on the adjoining side, but not on the free side.
  • The so-called opening dimension (also internal dimension ) results when creating openings such as for windows or doors . The width of an additional joint is added to the standard size.
