The Chemnitz Public Library is the public library of the city of Chemnitz . It comprises almost half a million media units , including around 150,000 historical holdings. It has been housed in the TIETZ cultural department store since 2004 .
history
The library was founded in 1869 as a study library by a foundation of 444 books by the Zschopau entrepreneur Jacob Georg Bodemer . In 1912 a public library was opened . The city library and its holdings were completely destroyed in the Second World War . Only the outsourced historical books survived the bombing inferno. In 1950 the building was reopened on Schillerplatz. In 1953, its function was expanded to become a city and district library with a leading role for the public libraries in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district. Since 1976, an "international library" with foreign language literature has complemented the facility. With German reunification, it was restored to its original status as a city library. The plans for a new central library in the city center, which have been ongoing since 1990, were completed in 2004 with the establishment of the "Das Tietz" cultural department store.
Historical inventory
The library has an extensive historical inventory - books, bound newspaper and magazine volumes and other printed matter from nine centuries. Items that are particularly worthy of protection are subject to lending restrictions and can only be viewed in the reading room.
