The building number is used to uniquely identify a building and is used as a primary key in databases.

Building numbers are used in administrations or companies that manage several buildings . Examples are structure numbers in road construction administration, in municipal building administrations or mast numbers for overhead line masts . The structure of the building numbers depends on the area of ​​application.

Buildings of the federal states or federal states used for road traffic in Germany are marked with building numbers in a specified structure. It has seven digits and consists of the map sheet number of the topographic map on a scale of 1: 25,000 (TK 25), within which the structure is located, and a consecutive three-digit number. If the structure is exactly on the border of two sheets of TK 25, it is assigned to the adjacent card with the lower number. The allocation of building numbers is regulated in ASB-ING, edition 2008, part A, point 1.1.

The structure numbers (system number) used by Deutsche Bahn have eight digits.

There are also building numbers for wind turbines. These are intended to enable rescue services and maintenance services to quickly and clearly identify the wind turbine in an emergency. The numbers are managed in the WEA-NIS database.
