Bayswater is a partially underground station of the London Underground in the City of Westminster , in the center of the borough of Bayswater , not far from Notting Hill . The station in the Travelcard tariff zone 1 is served by the Circle Line and the District Line . It was used by 5.69 million passengers in 2014. The station building is located on Queensway. On the same street, about 200 meters further south, is the Queensway station on the Central Line .

history

The station was opened on October 1, 1868 by the Metropolitan Railway , the predecessor of the Metropolitan Line - as part of the extension towards South Kensington , which was also used by the District Railway (predecessor of the District Line) from 1884 . The construction of the route through the elegant quarter required the excavation of an open-cut tunnel . A 13 meter deep incision with retaining walls was created, which was roofed with arches made of bricks. Two false facades were built on Leinster Gardens to the east in order to continue to give the impression of terraced houses and to block the disturbing view of the tracks.

The platforms in the cut were covered with a glass roof. A small part of the incision was left uncovered to allow the smoke and steam from the locomotives to escape. Electrical operation began in 1905. Since 1949, the Circle Line has been considered a separate line, while the Metropolitan Line has been withdrawn.

In 1923 the station was given the somewhat awkward name of Bayswater (Queen's Road) & Westbourne Grove . In 1933 there was another name change, this time to Bayswater (Queen's Road) . On September 1, 1946, it was renamed Bayswater (Queensway) ; the parentheses disappeared soon afterwards, so that the station is again called Bayswater , as it was at the opening.
