The Iron Age Beacon Hill Fort of Burghclere on the 261 m high eponymous hill in Hampshire is one of the most famous hill forts in England . Other systems in other parts of England operate under the name “Beacon Hill”.

The hill fort with the keyhole-like floor plan on the top of the hill was never systematically excavated. Wall and moat are well preserved. The only access is on the south-east side and is accompanied by curved walls. Near the highest point are the remains of a barrow . There are some hut foundations and pits inside the ramparts.

Inside the complex is the grave ( map ) of George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon , who financed the expedition that led to the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922 .

A memorial stone in the Seven Barrows, south of Beacon Hill, commemorates a historical event . The inscription indicates that Sir Geoffrey de Havilland (1882-1965), aviation pioneer and founder of an aircraft company that bore his name, made his first successful flight here on September 10, 1910.
