Beacons of Ancestorship is the ninth studio album by the Chicago instrumental band Tortoise . It was released on June 23, 2009.
Style and reception
On "Beacons of Ancestorship" the five band members continue the genre mix known from the previous albums, not without adding new influences (for example punk in the title Yinxianghechengqi ). The album is characterized by recurring style breaks in the middle of a motif. Sarah Schaefer wrote on motor.de :
“You can only help yourself with lists: Electro, Jazz, Dub, Noise, Rock, Post-Rock; Tortoise is all of that and somehow not (...). "
The weblog Drowned in Sound called "Beacons of Ancestorship" an erratic cascade of surprises and awarded 8 out of 10 points, and the jazz magazine All About Jazz also found words of praise for the album.
Hit parade successes
"Beacons of Ancestorship" entered the US Billboard Charts on July 11, 2009 at number 149 and stayed there for a week.
