Beals is an impact crater near the eastern edge of the visible front of the moon and, due to its location, can only be observed directly from Earth under favorable libration conditions. It is located immediately south-southwest of the Riemann crater , so that the crater edges touch and overlap in places. Directly to the west is the large Gauss crater .

Beals shows only minor signs of erosion with no significant impacts within its boundaries. The inner crater wall is narrower in the north-northeastern part and penetrates into the outer wall of the 'Riemann' crater. The south side of Beals is somewhat irregular in shape. The crater floor has only a few low hills near its center.

Before 'Beals' was given its proper name by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1982 , it was known as 'Riemann A'.
