Bear's Den is a 6 acres (2.4 hectares ) large nature reserve in New Salem in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization and is accessible free of charge.
history
According to a local legend, it was here that the Indian chief Metacomet , better known to Europeans as King Philip , met with the chiefs of neighboring tribes in 1675 to plan attacks on the settlements of Hadley , Deerfield and Northampton . The sanctuary got its name from a black bear killed there .
In 1968 Mrs. Grais Poole Burrage bequeathed the first parts of what is now the protected area to the trustees, and in 1988 more land was added through donations.
Protected area
On its way to the nearby Quabbin Reservoir , the middle branch of the Swift River flows through the area and forms the Bear's Den Falls on a pond surrounded by forest . Further downstream are the remains of an old mill.
