Beat is a monthly trade magazine for music, production ( recording ) and DJing by Falkemedia- Verlag in Kiel .

The main topics of the magazine concentrate on the areas of technology, music and lifestyle. Beat provides hardware and software tests and specific application tips for music production with synthesizers and computers as well as for DJing and live performance. Reports on music topics and current music recommendations round off the range of topics. The Beat comes with a monthly DVD with software for music production, sample libraries and video material.

The Beat editorial team consists of salaried and freelance authors. Alexander Bota-Weber has been editor-in-chief since 2010, his predecessor was Thomas Raukamp since 2005. Home studio operators, sound engineers, producers, DJs and live performers are the target group of the magazine.

Special issues

Since February 2006, the special Beat Workzone issue has been published two to three times a year with a specific focus, also with DVD. Other special editions include the DJ Guide (01/2011), the Tonstudio-Bibel (01/2014 and 01/2015) and the Mega Tonstudio Bundle (2016).

As a supplement to the regular Beat, buying guides on individual topics, for example headphones, are occasionally published, but they depict the market incompletely and whose product tests or articles are shown as advertisements ( content marketing ).

Presence on the web

The Beat website is set up as an online magazine . The range of topics supplements the articles, some of which were taken from the print edition, with daily reporting.

There is also a Facebook page that also provides news on music production and DJing. A Twitter presence indicates new articles on the website. Beat also operates its own YouTube channel. An app is offered for iOS and Android that accesses the Beat's news feeds and also integrates the feeds of related German and English-language portals.

Software offerings

The online cloud offering Studio Drive (formerly Beat Drive ) acts as a free archive of sounds and plug-ins. Registered users have access to part of the constantly growing library, which they can use in their own productions without restriction. Subscribers to the print edition can make full use of the offer. According to the Beat editorial team, more than 18,000 users have registered since the start in spring 2013.

Another website is the Beat Serial-Center . It is used to distribute the serial numbers that are necessary for the use of many full versions on the booklet DVDs. By specifying the issue of the magazine and an e-mail address, the serial numbers will be sent by e-mail. Many of the programs on the booklet DVDs are special versions of well-known software for the Beat.

Some programs are also contract developments, such as the free sampler Zampler , for which both free and paid sound libraries are offered in a separate online shop and others are available on the booklet DVDs. Zampler uses the open data format SFZ to leave room for its own extensions. The program is available as a plug-in in the VST and Audio Unit formats , both for Windows and for MacOS .

Circulation numbers

According to the media data from January 1, 2016, the print run of the print edition in the same year is 23,500 copies, the widespread circulation is 15,500 copies and the sold circulation is 8,900 copies. The number of subscribers is given as 4,600. The beat is not IVW approved.
