Beate Alefeld-Gerges

Beate Alefeld-Gerges (* 1959 ) is a German grief counselor , qualified social pedagogue and author. She received the Federal Cross of Merit in 2017 for her commitment as the founder and educational director of the association “Trauerland - Center for Grieving Children and Young People eV” .

Life

After studying social affairs at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences, Beate Alefeld-Gerges worked in child and adolescent psychiatry in Bremen-East, in the Alten Eichen children's home and at the Office for Social Services. After the violent death of her twin sister in 1991, she completed a two-year training course as a grief counselor with Jorgos Canacakis . In the spring of 1999, she traveled to the United States for a six-month internship at the Dougy Center in Portland, Oregon, a center for grieving children. In November 1999 she founded the association “Center for Grieving Children and Young People eV” in Bremen, a contact point for children and young people in the region who have lost a loved one. She is the pedagogical director of the association and is a member of the board.

In 2013 Ms. Alefeld-Gerges was honored with the “ Golden Image of Women ” award. On October 4, 2017, she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her commitment .

Main topics of your work

Alefeld-Gerges has developed special concepts for grief counseling. The association, which was the first in this field in Germany when it was founded, works closely with public institutions and various institutions for child and youth welfare and trains grief counselors nationwide .
