Beate Sauer

Beate Sauer (* 1966 in Aschaffenburg ) is a German journalist and writer . She was best known for her historical novels. She also publishes detective novels under the pseudonyms Bea Rauenthal and Paula Bach .

life and work

Beate Sauer wanted to become a writer even in her childhood. After graduating from high school, however, she first studied philosophy and Catholic theology , worked as a freelancer for various newspapers parallel to her studies and completed a journalistic training after graduating.

In 1999, Grafit Verlag published her debut novel The Holy in Your Middle , which was awarded first prize in the detective novel category at the 10th North Rhine-Westphalian Author's Meeting in 1997 before it was published. Her first historical crime novel Die Buchmalerin , which she published in 2005, was nominated for the Friedrich Glauser Prize in 2006 and was instantly on the bestseller list. Since then, Beate Sauer has published further historical and detective novels, most of which are set in the Middle Ages . In 2015 she was awarded the Silver Homer in the Relationship & Society category for The Guardian of the Crown .

In January 2018, Echo der Toten was the first volume in the Friederike Matthée series, a historical crime novel series that takes place in the post-war German period .

Under the pseudonym Bea Rauenthal, she also wrote a crime trilogy about the two time-traveling inspectors Jäger and Weber, which was published by List Verlag .

Beate Sauer lives and works as a freelance writer in Cologne .
