Lettering of a mug

The cup of Vicarello - as Itineraria Gaditana known - are ancient votive offerings and contribute an important Itinerarinschrift . They were found in the 19th century.

The distance from Gades to Rome is shown on the silver cups by 106 place names and distances in miles. The beakers are considered to be important evidence of itinerary inscriptions from Roman times. The cups were placed as consecration offerings in the Apollon shrine in Vicarello ( Aquae Apollinares ) near the Lacus Sabatinus in central Italy. The dating is controversial; while Löhberg dates three of the cups to before 337 and the fourth to after 333/337, Florian Mittenhuber dates the cups to the first century AD.

The four similar silver cups may have been made in Spain and donated by a tour group who had made a pilgrimage to Aquae Apollinares. There are not too many such metal vessels among the well-known Roman spring animal finds. In addition to Vicarello, the sanctuaries in Bath / Aquae Sulis and Baden / Aquae Helveticae were apparently given such gifts. Bagni di Vicarello was a seaside resort until modern times and has hot springs near the ruins of the Roman thermal baths. The name Vicarello is derived from "Vicus Aurelii".

The cups are now in the Museo Nazionale Romano in Rome (Inv. Inv. 67497, 67498, 67499, 67500).
