The former Beckerplatz in Chemnitz was located on the site of today's Johannisplatz and Bahnhofstrasse . It was named in honor of the industrialist Christian Gottfried Becker , who was a benefactor of the Chemnitz population. A memorial was erected to him on the occasion of his 100th birthday. This, by the sculptor Anton dealer created, memorial graced the center of the square until the war years of the metallic donation fell victim.

During the air raids on Chemnitz in March 1945, the development of the square was largely destroyed and then not rebuilt in the previous plan. The only building that still exists today is that of the Dresdner Bank . It was located in the north of the square and was designed in the expressionist style by Heinrich Straumer . This house, completed in 1924, stands on the site of the former stock exchange.

The Poststrasse , which used to run between Falke and Johannisplatz , marked the late medieval city limits. It led directly past Beckerplatz and ended at the lively Johannisplatz .

To the left of Poststrasse , the tower-crowned town house was built between 1889 and 1891 according to the plans of the City Building Councilor Eduard Hechler . It was the central building of Beckerplatz and was built as a high school for citizens as early as 1857 . It was used as the town hall from 1879 to 1911 until the new town hall was completed. Before that, the old board tower, also known as the “wide tower”, stood at this very point , as the last part of the former city fortifications. This tower, demolished in 1889, previously served as a powder tower and prison and later housed the old police station. After 1911 the police headquarters moved into the town hall.

The former Chemnitz stock exchange stood on the corner of Langenstrasse and Poststrasse . The building (1864–1867), built in neo-Renaissance style , based on a design by the Leipzig architect Constantin Lipsius , was inaugurated on June 25, 1867. The stock exchange association founded on August 11, 1862, and the city of Chemnitz's employers' association had a major influence on the construction of the building. In 1899 the branch of the Dresdner Bank moved in, and between 1922 and 1924 a larger building (which still stands today) was built on the same site. This building survived the war destruction and after 1945 first the Sächsische Landesbank, later the Sparkasse, which still has a branch, resided in the house. In the 1990s, the house was reconstructed based on the historical model.
