The place of the replica

The Bedd Porus (also called Porius Stone) is a replica near the Afon Gain (river) east of Bronaber at Trawsfynydd in Gwynedd in Wales and is an early Christian tombstone (possibly from a leper burial ground ) with the three-line Latin inscription: “Porus lies here in the grave ”.

Bedd Porus or Porius Stone

The tombstone, dated to the 5th or 6th century, was moved between 1773 and 1830 from its original place of installation to the current position of the replica placed there in 1973. The original stone is in the National Museum of Wales.

The 46 cm high, 109 cm wide and 44 cm thick sandstone shows no signs of processing of the shape.

About 300 m away is the 3.1 m high, 1.5 m wide and 0.3 m thick menhir ( English standing stone ) Llech Idris . The stone circle remnant "Pen-y-stryd" is also nearby.
