Bedeque and Area is a community with community status in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island . It was only created in its current form in November 2014. Before that, the area was divided into two parishes, Bedeque .

geography

The community is north of Borden-Carleton on Lot 26 , Prince County . The main branch of the economy is agriculture or hunting.

Central Bedeque is on the south bank of the island. It has access to Northumberland Strait on the Dunk River .

history

The name, Central Bedeque, was first used in 1925 and was officially confirmed in 1944. Central Bedeque was given the title village in 1966. Before that, names like "Strong's Corner" and "Weatherbie's Corner" were in use.

The name "Bedeque" could be a corruption of a Mi'kmaq term with meanings such as "sunny camp site" or "the hot place". The term occurs in several place names in the area: Bedeque, North Bedeque and Lower Bedeque.
