Civil War Activities

During the civil war from 2002 to 2007, the FLDO, with discreet support from the French army, defended the West Vvorian cocoa region from the rebels from the north.

During the government crisis, the FLGO was seen as a supporter of Laurent Gbagbo . They refused to surrender their weapons and obey Alassane Ouattara 's orders.

After the 2010 presidential election at the turn of the year, there was heavy fighting in Duékoué. The occasion was the killing of a trader from the northern Vvorian Malinke people by the FLGO militiamen, which escalated with dozens of deaths.

From around March 20, 2011, the Forces républicaines de Côte d'Ivoire (FRCI) began their first major offensive. Since then, the defense of the city of Duékoué, allegedly with help from Liberia , has been massively strengthened by the FLGO.

On March 22, Human Rights Watch reported a massacre in Bedi-Gouzan , a village near Duékoué. 27 immigrants from Mali are said to have been murdered by FLGO militiamen armed with rifles, rocket launchers and machetes.

On the morning of March 28, the FRCI moved into Duékoué at several points and fought heavy fighting with the FLGO militias, which the FRCI referred to as " mercenaries and militiamen ". According to newspapers loyal to FRCI, there were many deaths. In the days before, FLGO militiamen erected roadblocks demanding money, looted a UNHCR camp in the city, robbed Doctors Without Borders vehicles and set fire to the houses of northern and central Ivory Coasts.

After the fighting, ONUCI found 130 bodies in two mass graves. In addition, 200 dead were found in the streets. According to the UN, those responsible are the FLGO in 100 cases.

According to a preliminary investigation by the human rights department of the ONUCI, the FRCI soldiers occupied the FLGO militia headquarters " Colombo " after the capture of Duékoué by dividing the people into women or children and men. The men were then taken away and executed.
