Beles ( lux . : Bieles , French : Belvaux ) is a village in the so-called Minettsgéigend (smelting / mining area) in the southwest of Luxembourg . Beles is the administrative center of the municipality of Sassenheim (lux .: Suessem), to which the three other localities Ehleringen , Sassenheim and Zolwer also belong. Name meaning

The name of the village is first mentioned in 1272 as Belevas or in a similar spelling. The spelling changes a little later, for example Belevaus (1327), Belvais (1351), Beluas (1373), Belvis (1541), Belwiss (1552), Belvois (1561).

It is assumed that the name originally comes from the Celtic (belo) and means 'bright', 'shiny' and is associated with a body of water.
